![]() Wilkes-Barre is a city of approximately
40,000 residents located in the scenic Wyoming Valley of Northeastern
Pennsylvania. Approximately 3000 people of the Jewish faith call the Valley
their home. We are less than a two-hour drive from Philadelphia
and about two-and-one-half hours from New York City. Easy access to interstate
highways and a regional airport make transportation into and out of Wilkes-Barre
a breeze.
Whoever coined the phrase "country
comfort and city convenience" may have had Wilkes-Barre in mind. Our
city is situated along the banks of the Susquehanna River surrounded
by mountains to the east and west. Although life in Wilkes-Barre is
intimate, hassle-fee and affordable, we are anything but a sleepy little
city. Cultural, educational and recreational activities abound in the
region. Take a course or attend a speaker series at one of two area
colleges located near the Shul. Attend a Broadway show or concert at
the performing arts center on the city-square, catch a hockey or football
game at the recently constructed arena, or take in a AAA baseball game.
For outdoor activities consider hiking or water sports at one of the
many parks located nearby, or travel 15 minutes to the ski slopes and
golf courses.
The Jewish Community Center located just
minutes from our Shul is a hub of Jewish activity. The JCC offers community-theater,
organized sports and a newly remodeled state of the art exercise facility.
The Center hosts Jewish events throughout the year and serves as a meeting
place for a multitude of clubs, both religious and secular. Take a swim,
use the sauna, or enroll in an exercise class. Sharpen your computer skills,
join a Yiddish language group, or weave a tallis on the JCC loom. And
as many activities as there are for adults, there's even more for children!
The JCC summer day camp located on the scenic "Back Mountain"
is a jewel in our crown. Camp offers a fun-filled summer respite for children
across the Wyoming Valley. Special trips and overnights are a regular
part of the camp's programming. We believe that the facilities, grounds
and activities at our JCC camp rival those of the finest camps in the
Poconos.
The United Hebrew Institute, a Torah
Umesorah affiliated school, serves the children of our community from
pre-school through the eighth grade. Classes at the UHI are small in
size, and each student receives the individual attention he or she deserves.
UHI has been the cornerstone educational institution of our community
for over 50 years and the school enjoys a reputation throughout the
region for excellence in education, both secular and Jewish. The parents
of UHI students agree: the UHI is a welcome alternative to the large
and impersonal schools that have become part and parcel of our educational
landscape.
Over 1.5 million people live within a
50 mile radius of Wilkes-Barre, so there's always something of interest
happening in the area. If you're viewing this web site from out of town
and looking to make a move, we invite you to contact the Rabbi to schedule
a visit to our community. Consider making our town your town too!
